Aaron Smith was born on April 19, 1976 in Colorado Springs, Colorado, played college football at Northern Colorado, and was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the fourth round, 109th overall, in 1999. He appeared in six games as a rookie without a start. From 2000 he was the Steelers' starting left defensive end. Madden NFL 02 rated him 65 after the 2001 season.
Smith was voted to the Pro Bowl for the 2004 season, the year Madden NFL 05 rated him 88. He recorded four tackles in the Super Bowl XL win over Seattle in February 2006. A torn biceps against New England in December 2007 ended that season early. He returned in 2008 for 44 tackles and 5.5 sacks and a second ring in Super Bowl XLIII, and Madden NFL 09 rated him 94.
A torn rotator cuff in an October 2009 win over Detroit put him on injured reserve, and he landed there again in each of the next two seasons. Pittsburgh released him on March 2, 2012 and he retired that August with 481 tackles and 44 sacks in 160 games. He was elected to the Colorado Springs Sports Hall of Fame in 2018 and named to the Steelers Hall of Honor in 2023.
