J.J. Watt took a winding road, recruited to Central Michigan as a tight end before transferring to Wisconsin as a walk-on defensive end, and by 2010 he had turned himself into a first-team All-American. Houston took him 11th in 2011, and he became one of the most dominant defenders the sport has seen, an interior-to-edge force who wrecked games in ways the position rarely allows.

The Madden card leapt to the ceiling and stayed. He opened at an 80, jumped to an 88, and hit a 99 in Madden NFL 14, holding the top rating across four straight releases, the reward for a run of three Defensive Player of the Year awards and two 20.5-sack seasons, a feat reportedly no other player has managed. He batted passes at the line, chased down runners from behind, and generated pressure from everywhere.

Back surgery in 2016 and the injuries that followed interrupted a historic prime, and he finished his career with a couple of seasons in Arizona before retiring after 2022 with 114.5 sacks. He won the Walter Payton Man of the Year award for raising tens of millions in Hurricane Harvey relief, and his brothers Derek and T.J. reached the league too.
