Shawne Merriman was born on May 25, 1984 and raised in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. He played college football at Maryland and was drafted 12th overall by the San Diego Chargers in 2005. He recorded 10 sacks as a rookie and was named NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year, a season Madden NFL 06 rated 82.

In 2006 he had 17 sacks in 12 games, missing four to a suspension for the anabolic steroid nandrolone, and was named first-team All-Pro; Madden NFL 07 rated him 92 for that year. He added 12.5 sacks and a third straight Pro Bowl in 2007, along with second-team All-Pro honors, and Madden NFL 08 put him at 98 for the season, the highest figure on his card.

He played one game in 2008 before surgery on the torn posterior cruciate and lateral collateral ligaments in his left knee ended the year, and Madden NFL 10 rated him 89 for his 14-game return in 2009. San Diego waived him in 2010 and Buffalo claimed him, and he appeared in 15 games across 2011 and 2012. He announced his retirement on March 6, 2013, founded the MMA promotion Lights Out Xtreme Fighting in 2019, and finished with 45.5 NFL sacks.
