LaVar Arrington: No. 2 pick, three Pro Bowls, 23.5 sacks

LaVar Arrington was born June 20, 1978, in Pittsburgh. At Penn State he won both the Bednarik and Butkus awards in 1999 and finished ninth in the Heisman Trophy voting before leaving after his junior season. Washington drafted him second overall in 2000. He made 55 tackles and four sacks as a rookie and was named to the PFWA All-Rookie Team.

Arrington had 99 tackles and three interceptions in 2001, including a 67-yard return for a touchdown, and was voted to the Pro Bowl and second-team All-Pro; Madden NFL 02 rated him 79 for that season. He recorded a career-high 11 sacks in 2002. In 2003 he co-led the NFL with six forced fumbles and earned a third straight Pro Bowl selection, the year Madden NFL 04 rated him 97.

Knee trouble limited him to four games in 2004, the season Madden NFL 05 put him at 98, and he started eight of 13 games in 2005 with a 95 in Madden NFL 06. He paid Washington $4.4 million in March 2006 to buy his release, signed with the Giants, and ruptured an Achilles tendon in Week 7. New York released him in February 2007, and he retired that year following a motorcycle crash in Maryland. Arrington was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2022.
