Cut by Miami, took the CFL detour to a Tampa Bay title
Shelton Quarles got no draft call out of Vanderbilt. Miami signed him in 1994 and cut him in camp, so he went north and played two seasons for the BC Lions before Tampa Bay gave him a look in 1997. He stuck for a decade, patrolling the middle of Monte Kiffin's Tampa 2 through 2006. In 2001 he took an interception 98 yards to the house against Green Bay, still the longest play in Buccaneers history, and after the 2002 season he made the Pro Bowl and helped the franchise win Super Bowl XXXVII, a 48-21 rout of the Raiders.
His Madden path mirrored his climb from special teamer to defensive signal-caller. He sat at 81 in the 2000 edition, bottomed out at a 67 in 2002, then vaulted into the mid-80s as he took over full time, holding 86 and 87 through the middle of the decade before peaking with an 89 in the 2006 edition, his final full season as a starter.
