Derrick Brooks was born on April 18, 1973 in Pensacola, Florida, played four seasons at Florida State and won the 1993 national championship there, and was drafted 28th overall by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1995. He started 13 of his 16 rookie games at right linebacker. Madden NFL 96 put him at a calculated 59 for the 1995 season.

Brooks started every regular-season game from 1996 through 2008 and was selected to 11 Pro Bowls. Madden NFL 99 put him at a calculated 89 for 1998, his fourth season. He was voted Associated Press Defensive Player of the Year for 2002, when he intercepted five passes and returned three of them for touchdowns, and Madden NFL 03 rated him 96 for that year.

On January 26, 2003 he returned an interception 44 yards for a touchdown in Tampa Bay's Super Bowl XXXVII win over Oakland, and Madden NFL 04 rated him 99 for the 2003 season. He won the Walter Payton Man of the Year award in 2000. The Buccaneers released him in 2009 after 14 seasons, all with the club, and he entered the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2014. He recorded a franchise-record 2,198 tackles and 25 interceptions.
