A linebacker who caught touchdowns in back-to-back Super Bowls
Pittsburgh drafted him in the third round, 91st overall, out of Ohio State in 1997, and he spent four years as a rotational piece before New England turned him loose in 2001. In Foxborough his intelligence and versatility made him a cornerstone of three championship defenses, winning Super Bowls XXXVI, XXXVIII and XXXIX.
His signature was a party trick that mattered. Lined up as a goal-line tight end, he caught touchdowns in both Super Bowl XXXVIII and Super Bowl XXXIX, part of 12 career receiving scores. On December 26, 2005, he became the first player with two touchdown catches and a sack in the same game since sacks became official in 1982. His best individual year, 2007, brought first-team All-Pro honors and a Pro Bowl nod before he closed out with two seasons in Kansas City.
Madden was slow to trust him, listing a 75 in the 2000 edition and a low of 65 in 2001, but his New England peak produced consecutive 90 ratings in the 2005 and 2006 editions. He later became an NFL head coach.
