Tedy Bruschi was born on June 9, 1973 in San Francisco and played defensive line at Arizona, where he tied the NCAA Division I-A career record with 52 sacks and was a consensus All-American in 1994 and 1995. New England drafted him in the third round, 86th overall, in 1996 and moved him to linebacker. He played 16 games without a start as a rookie, and Madden NFL 98 put him at a calculated 53 for the 1997 season.
He started all 16 games at outside linebacker in 2000, a season Madden NFL 2001 rated 84. New England won Super Bowl XXXVI after the 2001 season, XXXVIII after 2003 and XXXIX after 2004. He was second-team All-Pro in 2003, when he made 133 tackles and returned two interceptions for touchdowns, and Madden NFL 04 rated that season 86.
He was second-team All-Pro again in 2004 and made his only Pro Bowl, a season Madden NFL 05 listed at 89. On February 15, 2005 he had a stroke linked to a congenital heart defect. He returned against Buffalo on October 30 and played nine games that year, and shared Associated Press Comeback Player of the Year with Steve Smith. He retired on August 31, 2009 with 189 games, 1,074 tackles, 30.5 sacks and 12 interceptions, four of them returned for touchdowns.
