Steve Smith Sr. was born on May 12, 1979 in Los Angeles. He played at Santa Monica College and Utah before Carolina took him in the third round, 74th overall, in 2001. He returned the opening kickoff of his first NFL game for a touchdown, made the Pro Bowl and was a first-team All-Pro as a return specialist that season. Madden NFL 03 rated him 67 for 2002, his first year as a regular starter.
A broken leg in the 2004 opener held him to one game. He returned in 2005 to lead the league in receptions (103), receiving yards (1,563) and receiving touchdowns (12), taking Comeback Player of the Year and a second first-team All-Pro selection. Madden NFL 07 rated him 97 for the 2006 season, and Madden NFL 25 rated him 90 for 2013, his last year in Carolina.
The Panthers released him in March 2014 and Baltimore signed him; he gained 1,065 receiving yards that season, rated 87 in Madden NFL 15. A torn Achilles ended his 2015 season after seven games. He retired after the 2016 season with 1,031 receptions for 14,731 yards, and was a Hall of Fame finalist for the class of 2025.
