Curtis Martin was born on May 1, 1973 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, played college football at Pittsburgh, and was selected by the New England Patriots in the third round of the 1995 draft with the 74th pick. He ran for 1,487 yards as a rookie and was named Offensive Rookie of the Year. Madden NFL 96 put him at a calculated 69 for that 1995 season.

He passed 1,000 rushing yards again in 1996 and started 13 games in 1997, a season Madden NFL 98 listed at a calculated 92. Martin joined the New York Jets in 1998 and started all 16 games in each of the next seven seasons. In 2004, at 31, he led the NFL with 1,697 rushing yards, one more than Shaun Alexander, and was named first-team All-Pro. Madden NFL 05 rated him 88 for that season.

A knee injury ended his 2005 season after 12 games and he was placed on injured reserve that December, a year Madden NFL 06 rated him 95 for. He did not play again and announced his retirement on July 26, 2007. The Jets retired his No. 28, and the Pro Football Hall of Fame inducted him in 2012. He finished with 14,101 rushing yards and five Pro Bowl selections.
