Ruben Brown was born on February 13, 1972 and grew up in Lynchburg, Virginia, where he attended E. C. Glass High School. He played college football at Pittsburgh and was drafted by the Buffalo Bills with the 14th pick in 1995. He started all 16 games at left guard as a rookie, a season for which Madden NFL 96 put him at a calculated 66.

Brown was selected to the Pro Bowl after every season from 1996 through 2003 and was named All-Pro four times. Madden NFL 2000 put him at a calculated 94 for the 1999 season, and Madden NFL 04 rated him 97 for 2003, his last year in Buffalo.

He signed with the Chicago Bears in 2004 and started every game he played across four seasons there. Chicago reached Super Bowl XLI after the 2006 season, the year Brown made his ninth Pro Bowl and Madden NFL 07 rated him 87. A shoulder injury sent him to injured reserve in November 2007, and he announced his retirement in February 2009 with 181 starts in 181 career games. He was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 2015.
