Jamal Williams was born on April 28, 1976 in Washington, D.C., and played high school football at Archbishop Carroll there. He spent 1995 at Oklahoma State, 1996 at Kemper Military School and Junior College, and returned to Oklahoma State in 1997 as a first-team All-Big 12 selection. San Diego took him in the second round of the 1998 supplemental draft, and Madden NFL 99 put him at a calculated 72 for that season.
An injury in the third game of the 2001 season ended his year, and he returned in 2002 to win the Ed Block Courage Award. San Diego switched to a 3-4 in 2004 and moved him to nose tackle, where he was second-team All-Pro that season. He started the Pro Bowl and was first-team All-Pro for both 2005 and 2006, seasons for which Madden NFL 06 rated him 90 and Madden NFL 07 rated him 96. A third straight Pro Bowl followed 2007, for which Madden NFL 08 rated him 98.
A triceps injury in the 2009 opener ended his last season in San Diego, where he made the Chargers' 50th Anniversary Team. The Chargers released him on March 4, 2010, and he signed with Denver five days later, starting all 16 games at nose tackle in 2010 before Denver released him the following March. He was inducted into the Chargers Hall of Fame in 2022 as its 40th member.
