Rodney Harrison was born on December 15, 1972, in Markham, Illinois, and played college football at Western Illinois, where he set school records with 345 career tackles and 28 in a single game. San Diego drafted him in the fifth round in 1994, 145th overall, and he appeared in 15 games as a reserve that year. Madden NFL 96 put him at a calculated 72 for the 1995 season.

He became a full-time starter at strong safety in 1996. In 1998 he recorded 113 tackles, made his first Pro Bowl and was named first-team All-Pro, and Madden NFL 99 put him at a calculated 84 for that season. He had six interceptions and six sacks in 2001 and returned to the Pro Bowl, a year Madden NFL 02 rated him 93. San Diego released him in February 2003.

Harrison signed with New England the following month and won Super Bowl XXXVIII and Super Bowl XXXIX. He returned a Ben Roethlisberger interception 87 yards for a touchdown in the January 2005 AFC Championship Game, then intercepted Donovan McNabb twice in Super Bowl XXXIX. Madden NFL 05 rated him 97 for that 2004 season. He retired in June 2009 with 34 interceptions and 30.5 sacks, and was inducted into the Patriots Hall of Fame in 2019.
