Donte Whitner made a business of the collision. After the NFL fined him for a hit on Rams receiver Chris Givens in 2013, he tried to legally change his surname to Hitner, and only a court scheduling requirement stopped him from finishing the paperwork.

Buffalo took him eighth overall in the 2006 draft out of Ohio State, and he started right away, intercepting Tom Brady in his first game before the play was overturned. He spent five years with the Bills, returning a pick 76 yards for a score against Tampa Bay in 2009 and piling up 18 tackles against Pittsburgh in 2010. In San Francisco he reached three straight Pro Bowls from 2012 through 2014 and played in Super Bowl XLVII, recording eight tackles in a 34-31 loss to Baltimore. He finished with 922 tackles and 11 interceptions across stops in Buffalo, San Francisco, Cleveland and Washington.

Madden clocked the rookie at 82 in the 2006 edition, then bumped him to a 92 by 2008 as he became Buffalo's tone-setter. The number cooled through the middle years before landing back at 90 in the 2015 game.
