Matt Birk was born on July 23, 1976 in Saint Paul, Minnesota, played college football at Harvard, and was selected by the Minnesota Vikings in the sixth round of the 1998 draft, 173rd overall. He appeared in 22 games as a backup over two seasons, took over at center in 2000 and started all 16 games, making his first Pro Bowl. Madden NFL 2001 rated him 73 for that season.
He was a second-team All-Pro in 2003, and Madden NFL 04 rated him 93 for that year. Madden NFL 05 rated him 96 for 2004, a season that ended four games early with sports hernia surgery, and a hip injury then cost him all of 2005. He returned to make Pro Bowls after the 2006 and 2007 seasons, and Madden NFL 09 rated him 95 for 2008, his last year in Minnesota.
He signed with Baltimore in 2009 and started every game in each of his four seasons there. He won the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award in 2011 and Super Bowl XLVII in February 2013, then announced his retirement on February 22, 2013. He co-founded Unity Catholic High School in Burnsville, Minnesota in 2019 and ran for lieutenant governor in 2022. He played 210 games with 187 starts.
