Stephen Davis was born March 1, 1974 in Spartanburg, South Carolina, played college football at Auburn, and was drafted by the Washington Redskins in the fourth round, 103rd overall, in 1996. He carried 23 times as a rookie, and Madden NFL 97 listed him at 46 for that season. He became the starter in 1999 and rushed for 1,405 yards, leading the NFL with 17 rushing touchdowns, and Madden NFL 2000 put him at a calculated 81 for that season.
That 1999 season brought a Pro Bowl selection and second-team All-Pro honors. He rushed for 1,318 yards in 2000 and returned to the Pro Bowl, and Madden NFL 2001 listed him at 92 for that season. He led the NFL with 356 carries in 2001 and ran for 1,432 yards, his highest total in seven years at Washington.
Carolina signed him in 2003, and he rushed for a career-high 1,444 yards and made his third Pro Bowl. He led all rushers that postseason with 315 yards as the Panthers reached Super Bowl XXXVIII, a 32-29 loss to New England. Madden NFL 05 listed him at 92 for the 2004 season, in which a knee injury held him to two games. He scored 12 rushing touchdowns in 2005, played 2006 with the St. Louis Rams, and finished with 8,052 rushing yards and 65 rushing touchdowns in 143 games.
