Sean Taylor was born on April 1, 1983 in Florida City, Florida, and played college football at Miami from 2001 to 2003. Washington selected him fifth overall in the 2004 draft. He started 13 of 15 games as a rookie, and Madden NFL 05 rated him 85 for 2004. He started all 15 games he played in 2005, a season Madden NFL 06 rated him 91.
He started all 16 games in 2006 and was selected to his first Pro Bowl. Madden NFL 07 rated him 95 for that season. In the Pro Bowl on February 10, 2007, he knocked down Buffalo punter Brian Moorman on a fake punt. He played nine games in 2007 and had five interceptions, tied for the most in the NFC, and Madden NFL 08 rated him 90 for the year.
On November 26, 2007, an intruder shot Taylor in the leg at his home in the Miami area. The bullet severed his femoral artery and he died the following day, November 27, at the age of 24. He was voted to a second Pro Bowl posthumously in December 2007, the first deceased player elected to the game. Washington retired his number 21 on October 17, 2021.
