Marcus Coleman came out of Texas Tech in the fifth round, 133rd overall, to the Jets in 1996, and at 6-2 and 210 pounds he had the frame to bother taller receivers. His 1999 season was the breakout: six interceptions, one of them returned 98 yards for a touchdown, plus 69 tackles. He was the rare defensive back who could slide from cornerback to safety without losing much, which kept him on the field for eleven years and 152 games.
He followed the expansion Houston Texans in 2002 and had his best ball-hawking year in 2003 with seven interceptions, then closed things out in Dallas in 2006. The career line reads 25 interceptions and 476 return yards, the numbers of a smart, physical playmaker rather than a flashy one.
His Madden trajectory rewarded the steady production. He sat at 86 in the 2000 edition, dipped and recovered, and reached a peak 90 in the 2004 edition on the strength of that Houston interception haul before tailing to 80 by the 2006 edition.
