DeMeco Ryans was born on July 28, 1984 in Bessemer, Alabama, and played at Jess Lanier High School before four seasons at Alabama, where he was a unanimous All-American and SEC Defensive Player of the Year in 2005. Houston drafted him 33rd overall in 2006. He started all 16 games at middle linebacker, finished with 155 tackles, led the NFL in solo tackles and was named AP Defensive Rookie of the Year, a season Madden NFL 07 rated him 79.
Ryans was voted to the Pro Bowl and named second-team All-Pro in 2007, when Madden NFL 08 rated him 88; Madden NFL 09 rated him 95 for 2008. A second Pro Bowl followed in 2009. A torn left Achilles tendon against Kansas City in October 2010 limited him to six games, and Houston traded him to Philadelphia on March 20, 2012.
He led the Eagles in tackles in 2012 and 2013, with 127 that second year alongside career highs of four sacks and two interceptions; Madden NFL 25 rated him 85 for that season. He tore an Achilles tendon again in November 2014 and was released in February 2016. Ryans joined the San Francisco 49ers as a coaching assistant in 2017, became their defensive coordinator in 2021, and was hired as head coach of the Houston Texans on January 31, 2023.
