Trent Dilfer: Bucs No. 6 Pick Who Won Super Bowl XXXV

Trent Dilfer was born on March 13, 1972, in Santa Cruz, California. He won the Sammy Baugh Trophy at Fresno State in 1993 and entered the draft after his junior season, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers selected him sixth overall in 1994. He threw four touchdowns against 18 interceptions as a first-year starter in 1995, and Madden NFL 96 carried a calculated 66 overall for that season. He threw 21 touchdowns in 1997 and became the first Buccaneers quarterback selected to the Pro Bowl.

Dilfer threw 21 touchdowns again in 1998, and Madden NFL 99 carried a calculated 87 overall for that season, the highest figure of his career. He went 38-38 as a starter in Tampa Bay. He signed with Baltimore on March 8, 2000, replaced Tony Banks midseason, and the Ravens won their last seven regular-season games to finish 12-4. He went 3-0 in the playoffs and completed 12 of 25 passes for 153 yards and a touchdown in the 34-7 win over the New York Giants in Super Bowl XXXV. Madden NFL 2001 listed him at 79 overall for that 2000 season.

Baltimore did not re-sign him. He spent four seasons in Seattle behind Matt Hasselbeck, then started 11 games for Cleveland in 2005, a season for which Madden NFL 06 listed him at 83 overall. He made six starts for San Francisco in 2007 and announced his retirement on July 9, 2008. He finished with 20,518 passing yards, 113 touchdowns and 129 interceptions over 14 seasons.

How to read these: Each row is the player’s rating in that year’s Madden, listed by the NFL season it covers (Madden NFL 2001 = the 2000 season). Madden sets its ratings before the season is played, so they reflect the previous season’s performance - a player’s breakout year tends to show up as a jump in the following year’s game.
About the starred rows*: Several early Madden releases rated players on a 1-15 scale, as printed in the game manuals, rather than the modern 0-99. We store those ratings converted to 0-99 (each manual point is about 6.6) so you can compare players across eras at a glance - use the 0-99 / 1-15 toggle above the table to see the original numbers on those seasons. EA didn’t publish an overall rating in those games, so the OVR* values for those years are our own calculation, the average of the player’s two best ratings.
Note: Some Madden releases tracked fewer attributes than others. Cells shown as - were not published by EA that year.
