Sam Gash was born on March 7, 1969 in Hendersonville, North Carolina, played fullback at Penn State, and was taken by the New England Patriots in the eighth round of the 1992 draft with the 205th pick. He spent six seasons in New England and caught 104 passes there. Madden NFL 97 listed him at 35 for the 1996 season.
Gash signed with the Buffalo Bills in 1998 and was named to the Pro Bowl and second-team All-Pro in each of his two seasons there. In 1999 he caught 20 passes for 163 yards and did not carry the ball once, the first back selected to a Pro Bowl without a rushing attempt; the calculated Madden NFL 2000 rating for that season was 87.
He joined the Baltimore Ravens in 2000 and blocked for a running game that beat the New York Giants 34-7 in Super Bowl XXXV. Madden NFL 02 listed him at 93 for the 2001 season, his highest figure. He returned to Buffalo for 2003, a season for which Madden NFL 04 listed him at 76. Across twelve seasons he played 177 games and finished with 169 receptions for 1,347 yards and 13 receiving touchdowns.
