Tommy Maddox: UCLA first-rounder, XFL MVP, Steelers starter

Tommy Maddox was born on September 2, 1971, in Shreveport, Louisiana, and played two seasons at UCLA before the Denver Broncos took him 25th overall in the 1992 draft. He backed up John Elway, then moved to the Rams in 1994 and the Giants in 1995. Madden NFL 94 carried a calculated 26 overall for his 1993 season. He was out of the league by 1997 and worked as an insurance agent in Dallas.

Maddox returned through the Arena Football League and then the XFL, where he was named the league's 2001 MVP and led the Los Angeles Xtreme to a 38-6 win in the Million Dollar Game. Pittsburgh signed him in 2001 and named him the starter on October 2, 2002. On November 10 he threw for 473 yards in a 34-34 tie with Atlanta, and he was voted NFL Comeback Player of the Year. Madden NFL 03 listed him at 59 for that season.

He started all 16 games in 2003, a season Madden NFL 04 rated 84. Pittsburgh drafted Ben Roethlisberger in 2004, and Maddox made his final start on November 20, 2005, a 16-13 overtime loss to Baltimore; Madden NFL 06 had him at 79 for 2005. He was on the roster when the Steelers won Super Bowl XL and was released on March 3, 2006. Over 92 games he completed 683 of 1,200 passes for 8,087 yards, 48 touchdowns and 54 interceptions.

How to read these: Each row is the player’s rating in that year’s Madden, listed by the NFL season it covers (Madden NFL 2001 = the 2000 season). Madden sets its ratings before the season is played, so they reflect the previous season’s performance - a player’s breakout year tends to show up as a jump in the following year’s game.
About the starred rows*: Several early Madden releases rated players on a 1-15 scale, as printed in the game manuals, rather than the modern 0-99. We store those ratings converted to 0-99 (each manual point is about 6.6) so you can compare players across eras at a glance - use the 0-99 / 1-15 toggle above the table to see the original numbers on those seasons. EA didn’t publish an overall rating in those games, so the OVR* values for those years are our own calculation, the average of the player’s two best ratings.
Note: Some Madden releases tracked fewer attributes than others. Cells shown as - were not published by EA that year.
