The third-round Panther who waited behind Peppers, then feasted
For three seasons Charles Johnson was a rotational piece stuck behind Julius Peppers on the Carolina defensive line. When Peppers left in free agency after 2009, Johnson finally got the reps and turned into one of the NFL's steadiest edge rushers. A third-round pick, 83rd overall out of Georgia in 2007, he posted 11.5 sacks in 2010 and never really slowed down, averaging roughly 10.5 sacks a year from 2011 through 2014.
The production earned him a six-year, $72 million deal after the 2011 lockout that briefly made him the highest-paid player in football. He spent all 11 of his pro seasons in Carolina and set the franchise's postseason sack record. He finished with 67.5 career sacks, all in one uniform.
Madden charted the whole slow burn. Johnson opened at 75 in the 2007 edition, then sagged to 68 in the 2009 game while he was still a reserve. Once the sacks started coming the number followed, jumping to 88 in the 2011 edition and reaching a career-high 93 in the 2013 edition before tapering off in his thirties.
