Ohio State two-way star, then nine years a Panther
At Ohio State, Chris Gamble did something almost nobody does anymore: he started at cornerback and wide receiver on the same team, a two-way piece of the Buckeyes' undefeated 2002 national title run. Carolina took the athlete 28th overall in 2004 and stuck him at corner full time.
He answered by starting all 16 games as a rookie, the first rookie defensive player in Panthers history to do it. Gamble never left. Across nine seasons, all in Carolina, he set the franchise interception record with 27, added 508 tackles and 96 pass breakups, and once returned a pick 101 yards against Tampa Bay. He was reliable and quietly excellent, a corner offenses stopped testing even though he never made a Pro Bowl.
Madden charted his rise steadily. Gamble opened at 77 in the 2004 edition, climbed to 88 by 2006 and held there, then hit his ceiling of 91 in both the 2010 and 2012 versions, the numbers finally matching a decade of shutdown work in the Carolina secondary.
