Al Wilson was born on June 21, 1977 in Jackson, Tennessee. He captained Tennessee's 1998 national championship team and was a consensus first-team All-American. Denver took him 31st overall in the 1999 draft, and he started 12 of his 16 rookie games. Madden NFL 2000 put him at a calculated 69 for the 1999 season.
He reached his first Pro Bowl after the 2001 season, when Madden NFL 02 rated him 73. He led Denver in tackles with 132 in 2002 and 88 in 2003, and made the Pro Bowl after both. On November 21, 2004 he returned an interception against New Orleans for his only NFL touchdown, and Madden NFL 05 rated him 95 for that season. He was a first-team All-Pro in 2005, the year Madden NFL 06 rated him 96.
On December 3, 2006 against Seattle he was injured on a fake field goal and carted off temporarily paralyzed. He played the following week, led Denver with 102 tackles and made a fifth Pro Bowl. Denver agreed to trade him to the Giants in March 2007, but he failed the physical and the Broncos released him on April 13. He announced his retirement on September 10, 2008 with 125 games, 723 tackles and 21.5 sacks, and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame on December 7, 2021.
