Shawn Barber Madden Career 1999-2008 - Peak 93 OVR
The Richmond linebacker fluid enough to cover backs and tight ends
Barber came from a small program, the University of Richmond, where he was the Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Year in 1997 before Washington took him in the fourth round in 1998. What set him apart was range, a linebacker loose enough to run with backs and tight ends in space, which in the early 2000s was a rare and valued thing. In 2002 with Philadelphia he took an interception 80 yards the other way for a touchdown.
He bounced through Washington, the Eagles, and a big free-agent deal with Kansas City, where he handled the middle for a Chiefs team that leaned on its offense. His Madden trajectory is a story of a slow build and a sharp peak: a 76 in the 2000 edition that actually dipped to 69 by 2002 before his best football pushed the number to 93 in the 2004 edition. From there it declined, down to a 78 by the 2007 edition, his final season, spent in Houston.
