Oklahoma State product, 80 sacks, three Pro Bowls in Pittsburgh

Jason Gildon was born on July 31, 1972 in Altus, Oklahoma, played college football at Oklahoma State, and was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the third round, 88th overall, in 1994. He played mainly on special teams for two seasons, then took over as the starting left outside linebacker in 1996. He started all 16 games in 1998, a season for which Madden NFL 99 put him at a calculated 86.

Gildon recorded a career-high 13.5 sacks in 2000 and was selected to the Pro Bowl after the 2000, 2001 and 2002 seasons. He was a first-team Associated Press All-Pro in 2001, when he had 12 sacks, an interception and three forced fumbles. Madden NFL 03 rated him 92 for the 2002 season, and Madden NFL 04 rated him 94 for 2003, his last year in Pittsburgh.

He signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2004 and appeared in nine games without a start, which closed his playing career. Gildon finished with 80 sacks, 19 forced fumbles, 11 fumble recoveries and three defensive touchdowns in 167 games. His 77 sacks for Pittsburgh made him the franchise's career leader at the time he left.

How to read these: Each row is the player’s rating in that year’s Madden, listed by the NFL season it covers (Madden NFL 2001 = the 2000 season). Madden sets its ratings before the season is played, so they reflect the previous season’s performance - a player’s breakout year tends to show up as a jump in the following year’s game.
About the starred rows*: Several early Madden releases rated players on a 1-15 scale, as printed in the game manuals, rather than the modern 0-99. We store those ratings converted to 0-99 (each manual point is about 6.6) so you can compare players across eras at a glance - use the 0-99 / 1-15 toggle above the table to see the original numbers on those seasons. EA didn’t publish an overall rating in those games, so the OVR* values for those years are our own calculation, the average of the player’s two best ratings.
Note: Some Madden releases tracked fewer attributes than others. Cells shown as - were not published by EA that year.
