Jamal Anderson was born on September 30, 1972 in Woodland Hills, California, played college football at Moorpark College and then Utah, and was drafted by the Atlanta Falcons in the seventh round, 201st overall, in 1994. He carried twice as a rookie and first started games in 1996. Madden NFL 97 rated him 42 for that 1996 season.

He rushed for 1,055 yards in 1996 and 1,002 in 1997, then carried 410 times for 1,846 yards and 14 touchdowns in 1998. That carry total was an NFL single-season record until Larry Johnson had 416 in 2006. He was named to the Pro Bowl and first-team All-Pro by the Associated Press, and Atlanta lost Super Bowl XXXIII to Denver 34-19. Madden NFL 99 put him at a calculated 85 for that season.

A knee injury in the second game of 1999 ended his season, and Madden NFL 2000 put him at a calculated 97 for 1999. He came back for 1,024 rushing yards in 2000, a season for which Madden NFL 2001 rated him 89. Another knee injury after three games in 2001 ended his playing career. Anderson played 88 games, all for Atlanta, and finished with 5,336 rushing yards, 156 receptions for 1,645 yards and 41 touchdowns.
