A coverage ace whose real job the game could not see

Curtis Buckley was an undrafted safety out of East Texas State who carved out a real NFL career doing the one thing that keeps a marginal player employed: covering kicks. He was a special-teams specialist, not a defender, and he spent three seasons in San Francisco from 1996 to 1998 flying down the field on coverage units.

Madden's grades for him are noisy and mostly low, as they are for a player who almost never lined up on defense. The game rated him an 18 for the 1996 season, an obvious glitch, then a 76 and an 81 in the two years after, the numbers bouncing around a player it had little basis to evaluate. He started just two games in his entire career, so there was almost nothing for the ratings to measure.

Buckley played 89 games across seven seasons for the Buccaneers, 49ers, Giants and Washington, nearly all of it on special teams, and never intercepted a pass. He was a coverage ace and a roster body, just the player fans never notice and coaches quietly value. Madden's grades, a glitchy 18 one year and an 81 the next, are the incoherent record of a man whose real job the game could not see.

How to read these: Each row is the player’s rating in that year’s Madden, listed by the NFL season it covers (Madden NFL 2001 = the 2000 season). Madden sets its ratings before the season is played, so they reflect the previous season’s performance - a player’s breakout year tends to show up as a jump in the following year’s game.
About the starred rows*: Several early Madden releases rated players on a 1-15 scale, as printed in the game manuals, rather than the modern 0-99. We store those ratings converted to 0-99 (each manual point is about 6.6) so you can compare players across eras at a glance - use the 0-99 / 1-15 toggle above the table to see the original numbers on those seasons. EA didn’t publish an overall rating in those games, so the OVR* values for those years are our own calculation, the average of the player’s two best ratings.
Note: Some Madden releases tracked fewer attributes than others. Cells shown as - were not published by EA that year.
