Jason Garrett was born on March 28, 1966, in Abington, Pennsylvania. He began at Princeton, transferred to Columbia when his father Jim became head coach there, then returned to Princeton and won the Asa S. Bushnell Cup as Ivy League Player of the Year. The New Orleans Saints signed him as an undrafted free agent after the 1989 draft. He played in the World League and the CFL in 1991 before Dallas signed him in 1992.
Garrett made the Cowboys as a third-string quarterback behind Troy Aikman in 1993. On Thanksgiving, November 24, 1994, with Aikman and backup Rodney Peete out, he completed 15 of 26 passes for 311 yards and two touchdowns in a 42-31 comeback win over Green Bay and was named NFC Offensive Player of the Week. Madden NFL 95 carried a calculated 82 for the 1994 season. Madden NFL 97 rated him 28 for 1996, a year he appeared in one game.
He started five games in 1998 after Aikman broke his collarbone, going 3-2 for an NFC East winner, and Madden NFL 99 carried a calculated 59 for that season. He was with the Cowboys for their Super Bowl wins following the 1992, 1993 and 1995 seasons and finished with 2,042 passing yards, 11 touchdowns and five interceptions. He signed with the New York Giants in 2000, a season for which Madden NFL 2001 rated him 73. He coached the Cowboys from 2010 to 2019, went 85-67 in the regular season and was named Associated Press NFL Coach of the Year for 2016.
