Leon Lett was born on October 12, 1968, in Mobile, Alabama, and played college football at Hinds Community College and Emporia State. The Dallas Cowboys drafted him in the seventh round, 173rd overall, in 1991. He became a full-time starter in 1994 and was selected to the Pro Bowl that season, for which Madden NFL 95 gave him a calculated 88.
In Super Bowl XXVII on January 31, 1993, Lett recovered a fumble and raised the ball short of the goal line, and Don Beebe knocked it loose for a touchback. On Thanksgiving Day, November 25, 1993, he touched a blocked field goal in the snow at Texas Stadium, and Miami recovered the live ball and kicked the winning score.
The NFL suspended him for a minimum of one year on December 3, 1996, for a second drug-policy violation, costing him the last three games of that season and the first 13 of 1997. Madden NFL 97 rated him 48 for 1996. He returned for a second Pro Bowl season in 1998, which Madden NFL 99 scored as a calculated 85, and Madden NFL 2001 rated him 89 for 2000. Lett won Super Bowls XXVII, XXVIII and XXX, recorded 22.5 sacks over 11 seasons, and worked on the Dallas coaching staff from 2011 through 2022.
