Sixth-round pick in 1985, Pro Bowl quarterback in 1995

Steve Bono was born on May 11, 1962 in Norristown, Pennsylvania, and played college football at UCLA. The Minnesota Vikings drafted him in the sixth round of the 1985 draft, 142nd overall. He spent time with Minnesota and Pittsburgh before joining San Francisco in 1989, behind Joe Montana and Steve Young. With both injured in 1991, Bono started six games and won five. Madden NFL 93 carried a calculated 66 for the 1992 season.

He joined Kansas City in 1994, and Madden NFL 95 carried a calculated 88 for that season. After Montana retired, Bono started all 16 games in 1995, threw for 3,121 yards and 21 touchdowns, led the Chiefs to a 13-3 record and the AFC West title, and was selected to the Pro Bowl. On October 1, 1995, against Arizona, he ran 76 yards for a touchdown, then the longest scoring run by a quarterback in NFL history. Madden NFL 96 carried a calculated 66 for that season, and Madden NFL 97 listed him at 97 for 1996, the highest figure of his career.

Kansas City went 9-7 in 1996 and turned to Elvis Grbac. Bono played two games for Green Bay in 1997, six for St. Louis in 1998 and two for Carolina in 1999. Madden NFL 99 carried a calculated 82 for the 1998 season. He finished with 10,439 passing yards, 62 touchdown passes and 42 interceptions in 88 games, across 15 seasons and seven teams.

How to read these: Each row is the player’s rating in that year’s Madden, listed by the NFL season it covers (Madden NFL 2001 = the 2000 season). Madden sets its ratings before the season is played, so they reflect the previous season’s performance - a player’s breakout year tends to show up as a jump in the following year’s game.
About the starred rows*: Several early Madden releases rated players on a 1-15 scale, as printed in the game manuals, rather than the modern 0-99. We store those ratings converted to 0-99 (each manual point is about 6.6) so you can compare players across eras at a glance - use the 0-99 / 1-15 toggle above the table to see the original numbers on those seasons. EA didn’t publish an overall rating in those games, so the OVR* values for those years are our own calculation, the average of the player’s two best ratings.
Note: Some Madden releases tracked fewer attributes than others. Cells shown as - were not published by EA that year.
