Clemson's home-run threat and Buffalo's six-yards-a-carry blur
Buffalo took Spiller ninth overall in 2010, a unanimous All-American out of Clemson who scored a touchdown in every game of his final college season. He needed a couple of years to earn the workload, then broke out in 2012 for 1,244 rushing yards on just 207 carries, averaging six yards a carry, a rate bettered only by Adrian Peterson that season. When coach Chan Gailey said he wanted to hand Spiller the ball until he threw up, it captured how dangerous he was with space to work.
The 2013 edition rates him a 92, the direct payoff of that 2012 explosion, and the number tumbles from there as knee and ankle trouble sapped the speed that made him special. He bounced through New Orleans, Seattle, the Jets and Kansas City before finishing around 3,097 rushing yards and adding 197 catches. Clemson retired his No. 28 and the College Football Hall of Fame enshrined him in 2021. He now coaches running backs at his old school.
