The pressure on Manning that broke open Super Bowl XLVIII
Detroit took Avril in the third round in 2008 out of Purdue, and by 2011 he had 11 sacks and six forced fumbles, a strip artist who chased quarterbacks from the blind side. But he is remembered most for one night in New Jersey. In Super Bowl XLVIII, his pressure on Peyton Manning forced the errant throw that Malcolm Smith returned for a touchdown, part of Seattle's 43-8 dismantling of Denver.
He spent five years in Detroit and five in Seattle, piling up more than 50 career sacks and a 2016 Pro Bowl nod. His Madden trajectory tracked the climb: a 76 as a 2008 rookie, into the mid-80s during his best Lions years, and a career-high 90 in the 2016 edition. A neck injury against Indianapolis in Week 4 of 2017 ended his season and, ultimately, his career; the Seahawks released him the following spring on a failed physical. He left as a rusher who won with a first step few tackles could match.
