The Michigan corner who turned Cincinnati's picks into points
Cincinnati took Leon Hall 18th overall in 2007, a consensus All-American out of Michigan, and got a corner who did his best work with the ball in his hands. On December 21, 2008, he intercepted three passes against Cleveland, one of them a 51-yard return for a touchdown, and years later he added a 21-yard pick-six in a 2013 playoff game against Houston. He finished with 26 career interceptions.
Hall was smart, sticky, and tough. Twice he tore an Achilles tendon, in November 2011 and again in October 2013, and twice he came back, earning second-team All-Pro honors in 2009 in between. After nine seasons in Cincinnati he wound down with single years for the Giants, 49ers, and Raiders.
Madden was slow to fully buy in, then all in. He sat at 80 as a rookie in the 2007 edition and even dipped to 75 in the 2009 game, but his coverage caught up to his reputation and he peaked at a 92 in the 2010 edition. He held in the high 80s and low 90s through 2013 despite the injuries before settling to a 71 by the 2018 game.
