A seventh-round nickel back hired as an NFL field judge in 2019

Nate Jones was born on June 15, 1982 in Newark, New Jersey, and returned kicks at Rutgers, where he was the Big East co-Special Teams Player of the Year in 2002 after two 100-yard kickoff return touchdowns. Dallas drafted him in the seventh round in 2004, 205th overall. He played all 16 games as a rookie with 33 tackles and a sack.

He was a backup and special-teams player across four seasons in Dallas, and Madden NFL 06 rated him 67 for 2005. Against the undefeated Patriots in 2007 he had seven tackles, a sack of Tom Brady and two forced fumbles; Madden NFL 08 rated him 62 that season. He signed with Miami in March 2008 and recorded three sacks, tying the NFL lead among cornerbacks and the Dolphins single-season record for a defensive back. Madden NFL 09 rated him 66.

In 2009 he made five starts, intercepted two passes and led the Dolphins with 19 special-teams tackles. Denver signed him in March 2010 and used him at safety and nickel corner, where he made a career-high 57 tackles; Madden NFL 11 rated him 67. He closed out 2011 with short stints in Miami and New England, finishing with 106 games, 234 tackles, six sacks and three interceptions. After officiating in the Pac-12, he was hired by the NFL as a field judge for the 2019 season.
