Illinois corner turned Patriots safety with two rings
Bill Belichick drafted Eugene Wilson as a cornerback out of Illinois in the second round of 2003, 36th overall, then immediately moved him to safety, and the rookie repaid the switch with an All-Rookie season on a championship team. He won Super Bowl XXXVIII that year and Super Bowl XXXIX the next, starting in the deep middle for one of the great defensive runs of the 2000s.
In the January 2005 AFC Championship Game he picked off Ben Roethlisberger twice, helping bury Pittsburgh on the way to that second title. His ball skills made him a valued Madden defender, climbing from a 70 in the 2003 edition to a peak of 90 in the 2005 game before easing down as the years and injuries accumulated.
Wilson spent five seasons in New England before finishing with stops in Tampa Bay and Houston, playing through 2011. In a 2007 game against the Jets he even returned an interception for a score, part of a Patriots season that tied an NFL record for players with a touchdown.
