The Hammer who anchored two secondaries
They called Chris Hope the Hammer, and he earned it as a striking free safety, first for Pittsburgh and then for Tennessee. The Steelers drafted the Florida State product in the third round, 94th overall, in 2002, and by 2005 he was the starting free safety on a Super Bowl XL champion, closing that title season with three interceptions, 69 tackles, and a forced fumble.
He cashed in after the ring, signing a six-year deal with the Titans in 2006 and immediately leading the team with 128 tackles and five interceptions. A frightening spinal cord injury against Cincinnati cut his 2007 season short, but he came back to make the Pro Bowl for the 2008 season. Madden treated him as a late bloomer whose value tracked his move to Tennessee: a 63 in the 2002 edition when he was a rookie reserve, then a steady climb to a 92 that held across the 2007, 2008, and 2009 games during his prime as the Titans' back-line signal caller.
Hope closed out his career with brief stops in Atlanta and Detroit, a York County, South Carolina, product who spent 11 seasons hitting people.
