Michael Lewis never played a down of college football. He drove a beer delivery truck around New Orleans, which is how he earned the nickname Beer Man, and he was nearly 30 before he stuck with the Saints in 2001. In 2002 he authored one of the great special-teams seasons ever, setting an NFL record with 2,432 combined kickoff and punt return yards and earning first-team All-Pro honors. He returned three kicks for touchdowns in his career and gave New Orleans an every-possession threat to flip field position.

The Madden card caught the wave. He was a 70 in the 2002 edition before his breakout, then jumped into the 80s and settled at a 92 in both the 2005 and 2006 editions. He played six seasons with the Saints and a final year with the 49ers in 2007. The hometown story stuck. New Orleans later inducted him into the team Hall of Fame, and his path from delivery routes to All-Pro remains one of the sport's best long-shot tales.
