Andra Davis hit people for a living, and Cleveland got him cheap, a fifth-round pick, 141st overall in 2002, out of Florida, where he had been a first-team All-SEC linebacker for Steve Spurrier. He turned into the heartbeat of the Browns defense almost immediately, piling up tackles from the middle and stuffing the run with a thump that defined his game. On November 9, 2003, he tied a franchise record with four sacks in a single game.

Over seven seasons in Cleveland he started 83 games and racked up 711 tackles, leading the team year in and year out, before a 2009 stop in Denver produced another 90-tackle season and a final run with Buffalo in 2010 and 2011. Madden caught the arc of a mid-round pick who outplayed his slot: a 59 as an unknown in the 2002 game, then a jump to an 86, and back-to-back 90s in the 2005 and 2006 editions that marked his ceiling as a run-stuffer defenses game-planned around.
