Jeffrey Carl Backus was born on September 21, 1977 in Midland, Michigan, and played at Norcross High School in Norcross, Georgia. At Michigan he was part of the 1997 national championship team and a first-team All-Big Ten selection in 1999 and 2000. Detroit drafted him 18th overall in 2001. He started all 16 games at left tackle as a rookie and made the PFWA All-Rookie Team; Madden NFL 02 listed him at 70 for that season.
Backus started every game for eleven consecutive seasons. He signed a six-year, $40 million contract in July 2006, and Madden NFL 07 and Madden NFL 08 each rated him 88, covering the 2006 and 2007 seasons. He was Detroit's left tackle through the 0-16 season of 2008 and through the 2011 team that finished 10-6 and reached the playoffs; Madden NFL 12 listed him at 83 for 2011.
His run of 186 consecutive games started ended on November 22, 2012, when an injury made him inactive. He retired on March 14, 2013 after twelve seasons and later worked as a part-time coaching intern with the Lions. Backus spent his entire career with Detroit, played 191 NFL games and started all 191 of them.
