Chad Pennington was born on June 26, 1976 in Knoxville, Tennessee, and played college football at Marshall, winning the Sammy Baugh Trophy and going 13-0 as a senior in 1999. The New York Jets drafted him 18th overall in 2000, the first quarterback taken that year. He replaced Vinny Testaverde in the fifth game of 2002, threw for 3,120 yards with 22 touchdowns and six interceptions, led the NFL in completion percentage and passer rating and won the AFC East. Madden NFL 03 had listed that 2002 season at 72.

Madden NFL 04 moved him to 88 for 2003 and Madden NFL 05 to 90 for 2004, his highest figure, though 2003 began with a fracture-dislocation of his left hand that cost him six games. Rotator cuff tears in 2004 and 2005 required two operations. He started all 16 games in 2006, threw for 3,352 yards and won AP Comeback Player of the Year.

The Jets released him on August 7, 2008, hours after acquiring Brett Favre. He signed with Miami the next day, led the NFL with a 67.4 completion percentage and took the Dolphins to an 11-5 record and the AFC East title, winning Comeback Player of the Year a second time, the first player to take the award twice. Madden NFL 10 rated his 2009 season at 85; a torn shoulder capsule that September ended it after three games. Pennington retired in February 2012 with 17,823 passing yards and a 66.0 completion percentage, then an NFL record.
