The Jets took Ellis 12th overall in 2000, and for a decade he was the immovable object on the right side of their defensive line, a 290-pound end who could bull-rush a tackle straight into the quarterback's lap. He finished with 73.5 career sacks and two Pro Bowls, in 2003 and 2009, and he had a nose for the big moment: against Buffalo late in 2008 he scooped a J.P. Losman fumble and rumbled in for the touchdown that iced the game.

His Madden peak came in the middle of the decade, twin 93s in the 2005 and 2006 editions, framing a run of ratings that opened at 80 in the 2000 edition and rarely dropped below the mid-80s. Ellis was a wall on the Rex Ryan defenses that reached the AFC Championship after both the 2009 and 2010 seasons, then closed his career in New England, reaching Super Bowl XLVI in 2011 before the Patriots lost to the Giants 21-17.
