First-round Giants safety who hit like a linebacker
The Giants spent the 24th pick of the 1998 draft on Shaun Williams, a second-team All-American safety out of UCLA, and put him to work as an enforcer in the middle of the field. He started every game from 2000 through 2002 and was on the field for New York's run to Super Bowl XXXV, the 2000 NFC champions who met a Baltimore buzzsaw and lost 34-7.
Williams played his entire nine-year career for the Giants, finishing with 15 interceptions, 4.5 sacks and 335 tackles, the profile of a safety as comfortable blitzing and thumping as he was in coverage. A knee injury cost him the 2003 season and blunted what had been a rising trajectory.
His Madden high lines up with that break. Williams was already an 82 in the 2000 edition, climbed as he took over a starting role, and reached 92 in the 2003 edition, the card that arrived just as the knee gave out. He never touched that number again.
