Sam Adams was born on June 13, 1973 in Houston, Texas, played college football at Texas A&M, where he was a consensus All-American in 1993, and was selected eighth overall by the Seattle Seahawks in the 1994 draft. He made the PFWA All-Rookie Team while splitting time between defensive tackle and defensive end, and Madden NFL 95 rated him a calculated 86 for that 1994 season. His sack totals rose in Seattle to 5.5 in 1996 and 7.0 in 1997, though Madden NFL 97 had rated him 50 for the 1996 season.
Adams signed with Baltimore as a free agent in 2000 and started all 16 games at defensive tackle. That Ravens defense allowed 165 points, a record low for a 16-game season, and beat the New York Giants 34-7 in Super Bowl XXXV. Madden NFL 2001 rated him 87 for the 2000 season. He was a Pro Bowl starter after 2000 and again after 2001, second-team All-Pro for the first of those years and first-team All-Pro for the second.
He spent 2002 in Oakland and the next three seasons in Buffalo, where a third Pro Bowl followed the 2004 season. Madden NFL 06 rated him 90 for the 2005 season, the highest figure of his career. Adams finished with 44 sacks and 403 tackles in 206 games across 14 seasons and six teams.
