Dale Carter: 1992 Defensive Rookie of the Year, four Pro Bowls

Dale Lavelle Carter was born on November 28, 1969 in Covington, Georgia and was a consensus All-American at Tennessee in 1991. The Kansas City Chiefs took him 20th overall in the 1992 draft, and he was named NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year and to the PFWA All-Rookie Team. Madden NFL 93 put him at a calculated 49 for that 1992 season and Madden NFL 94 at a calculated 92 for 1993.

Carter went to four straight Pro Bowls following the 1994, 1995, 1996 and 1997 seasons and was a second-team Associated Press All-Pro in 1995. Madden NFL 95 had him at a calculated 98 for the 1994 season. On Thanksgiving Day, November 23, 1995, he was ejected for kicking Dallas receiver Michael Irvin during a 24-12 loss at Texas Stadium.

In 1999 he signed a four-year, $22.8 million contract with Denver, then the largest for an NFL defensive back. He was suspended for the entire 2000 season after a fourth substance-abuse violation and was released during 2001. He played for Minnesota in 2001, New Orleans in 2002 and 2003, missed 2004 with a blood clot in his lung and closed with Baltimore in 2005; Madden NFL 04 listed him at 77 for the 2003 season. Carter recorded 24 career interceptions. His brother is former receiver Jake Reed and his son is defensive back Nigel Warrior.

How to read these: Each row is the player’s rating in that year’s Madden, listed by the NFL season it covers (Madden NFL 2001 = the 2000 season). Madden sets its ratings before the season is played, so they reflect the previous season’s performance - a player’s breakout year tends to show up as a jump in the following year’s game.
About the starred rows*: Several early Madden releases rated players on a 1-15 scale, as printed in the game manuals, rather than the modern 0-99. We store those ratings converted to 0-99 (each manual point is about 6.6) so you can compare players across eras at a glance - use the 0-99 / 1-15 toggle above the table to see the original numbers on those seasons. EA didn’t publish an overall rating in those games, so the OVR* values for those years are our own calculation, the average of the player’s two best ratings.
Note: Some Madden releases tracked fewer attributes than others. Cells shown as - were not published by EA that year.
