Detroit's career sack leader with 95.5 in 187 games

Robert Porcher III was born on July 30, 1969 in Wando, South Carolina. He played college football at South Carolina State under head coach Willie Jeffries, and Detroit drafted him 26th overall in 1992. He started one game as a rookie and took over at left defensive end in 1994, a season Madden NFL 95 put him at a calculated 82.

Madden NFL 97 rated him 44 for 1996, the first of four consecutive seasons with double-digit sacks, a Lions first. His 15 sacks in 1999 set the franchise single-season record, and Madden NFL 2000 put him at a calculated 85 for that year. He was voted to the Pro Bowl after the 1997, 1999 and 2001 seasons, and Madden NFL 2001 rated him 94 for 2000.

From 1996 through 2001 he recorded 68 sacks, the second-highest total in the league over that span. He played his final game in 2003 and signed a one-year deal to return in 2004, but injuries kept him inactive and he announced his retirement on November 2, 2004. He finished with 95.5 sacks, a Detroit record, 673 tackles and 187 games. Porcher later opened three restaurants in downtown Detroit that filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2009, and the Lions inducted him into the Pride of the Lions on September 14, 2025.
