Clayton Holmes Madden Career 1995-1996 - Peak 96 OVR

Clayton Holmes came out of tiny Carson-Newman as a third-round pick in 1992, a fast nickel cornerback and return man who recovered a fumble in Super Bowl XXVII as a rookie and looked like a useful piece on a champion. His speed was real, and for a moment his future looked bright.

Madden rated the speed and little else. Holmes shows a 96 in Madden NFL 95 for the 1994 season, a wildly high overall built on a 98 speed rating and undercut by an awareness score of 9, one of the starker examples on any roster of the game grading pure measurables and nothing else. The 96 is a track time, not a scouting report.

The career came apart off the field. Repeated substance-abuse suspensions derailed Holmes, costing him games and then his job, and he was out of the NFL by 1996 after just 39 games. He won rings during the dynasty years but was never able to build on the promise of that rookie season. Madden's 96 caught a player who had the physical tools to be very good and the misfortune, and the trouble, to never become it. The speed was elite. Everything else got in the way.
