Boston College linebacker, four rings, 243 straight games

Bill Romanowski was born on April 2, 1966 in Vernon, Connecticut, played college football at Boston College, and was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the third round, 80th overall, in 1988. He started as a rookie, intercepted a pass in Super Bowl XXIII, and won a second title with the 49ers the next season. Madden NFL 92 listed him at a calculated 72 for the 1991 season and Madden NFL 94 at a calculated 59 for 1993, his last in San Francisco.

He spent 1994 and 1995 in Philadelphia, where he was ejected and fined for kicking Larry Centers in the head, then signed with Denver in 1996 and made the Pro Bowl. The Broncos won Super Bowl XXXII in January 1998, and he was named to a second Pro Bowl in 1998 as Denver won Super Bowl XXXIII. Madden NFL 99 put him at a calculated 94 for the 1998 season, the highest figure in his rating history, and Madden NFL 02 listed him at a stored 87 for 2001.

Romanowski joined Oakland in 2002 and played in Super Bowl XXXVII, the only Super Bowl he lost. He broke Kerry Collins's jaw with a helmet-to-helmet hit in a 1997 preseason game and spat in J. J. Stokes's face that December. In 2003 he punched teammate Marcus Williams during a scrimmage, crushing his eye socket and ending Williams's career; a jury awarded Williams $340,000. On 60 Minutes in 2005 he said he had used steroids and human growth hormone supplied by BALCO. He played 243 consecutive games, an NFL record until 2006, and last played in 2003, finishing with 39.5 sacks and 18 interceptions.

How to read these: Each row is the player’s rating in that year’s Madden, listed by the NFL season it covers (Madden NFL 2001 = the 2000 season). Madden sets its ratings before the season is played, so they reflect the previous season’s performance - a player’s breakout year tends to show up as a jump in the following year’s game.
About the starred rows*: Several early Madden releases rated players on a 1-15 scale, as printed in the game manuals, rather than the modern 0-99. We store those ratings converted to 0-99 (each manual point is about 6.6) so you can compare players across eras at a glance - use the 0-99 / 1-15 toggle above the table to see the original numbers on those seasons. EA didn’t publish an overall rating in those games, so the OVR* values for those years are our own calculation, the average of the player’s two best ratings.
Note: Some Madden releases tracked fewer attributes than others. Cells shown as - were not published by EA that year.
