The Kitchen, a 97, and a hard road after football

Nate Newton was undrafted out of Florida A&M, cut by Washington, and had to go to the USFL to get anyone's attention, but he ended up a six-time Pro Bowler and the biggest personality on the Great Wall of Dallas. They called him The Kitchen, because he was bigger than the Refrigerator, a mountain of a man who somehow moved like a much smaller one.

Madden rated him a genuine star at his position. Newton peaked at a 97 in Madden NFL 95 for the 1994 season, built on a 98 run-blocking rating, one of the highest grades any guard drew in that era, and he stayed in the high 80s and 90s across the dynasty. The number fit: he was the anchor of an offensive line that cleared the way for Emmitt Smith and kept Troy Aikman clean through three Super Bowl runs.

Newton made six Pro Bowls and won three championships across thirteen seasons in Dallas before finishing up in Carolina. His life after football took a hard turn: he was arrested twice in 2001 for trafficking large quantities of marijuana and served roughly two and a half years in federal prison, then reemerged as an anti-drug speaker who lost a great deal of weight and talked openly about his mistakes.

Madden's 97 marks the player at his best, one of the great guards of the 1990s. The story after football is a harder and more human one, but the Great Wall was real, and Newton was one of its cornerstones.

How to read these: Each row is the player’s rating in that year’s Madden, listed by the NFL season it covers (Madden NFL 2001 = the 2000 season). Madden sets its ratings before the season is played, so they reflect the previous season’s performance - a player’s breakout year tends to show up as a jump in the following year’s game.
About the starred rows*: Several early Madden releases rated players on a 1-15 scale, as printed in the game manuals, rather than the modern 0-99. We store those ratings converted to 0-99 (each manual point is about 6.6) so you can compare players across eras at a glance - use the 0-99 / 1-15 toggle above the table to see the original numbers on those seasons. EA didn’t publish an overall rating in those games, so the OVR* values for those years are our own calculation, the average of the player’s two best ratings.
Note: Some Madden releases tracked fewer attributes than others. Cells shown as - were not published by EA that year.
